Fruit and Hemp Seed Muesli

Remember back when the epitomical sign of friendship was exchanging beaded macramé hemp bracelets? Good times. While you’re reliving those happy memories, take a moment, if you will, to consider hemp seeds. The edible part of the hemp plant -- a non-psychoactive variety of (ahemCannabis sativa -- resembles sesame seeds, though the seeds are rounder, softer, and greenish in color. Their flavor is often compared to that of pine nuts, but with more subtlety and a hint of sweetness. Hemp seeds have made a number of recent superfood lists, and it’s no wonder. Rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, they offer a complete protein source that contains all nine essential amino acids. 

Hemp seeds add their singular appeal to this nutrient-packed breakfast muesli, which also features fellow superfood goji berries. Muesli, which means "mixture" in German, bears an uncanny resemblance to granola, a cereal that typically contains rolled oats combined with add-ins like dried fruit and nuts. But granola is baked, which squanders precious time in the morning. It takes mere minutes to throw a batch of muesli together. Plus, it can be served hot or cold, offering versatility as cool spring mornings begin to make way for summer. And it’s easy to keep on hand -- just store in an airtight container for up to three weeks.

Fruit and Hemp Seed Muesli

Serves 12

2 1/4 cups quick-cooking oats
1 cup shelled hemp seeds
1 cup raisins
3/4 cups dried goji berries, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup chopped pitted dates
1/2 cup raw green pumpkin seeds
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
